The client wanted an edgy ad that didn’t conjure up latin stereotypes, yet finding something cool and different about the culture. I think some the imagery for the ‘lucha libre’ is really bizarre and interesting. I did a set of 4 comps, copying the style of small town posters.

I found a wall painting of some mexican wrestlers and converted it into an ad. I added some extra POW and ZAP to the piece. Whatever it is now… it’s eye catching.

KCRW Host Portrait Ad

This probablly doesn’t represent great design. I think the final piece ended up looking better that I thought. Initially it was just going to be yummy black and white, with black squares holding the copy. Later, color pictures were added and I had to try balance the piece as more photos meant more rows and columns.

2008 Election Ad

Sometimes it’s hard to go back to one color when you design. I find the simplest of shapes always works best, when working with limited colors. You can’t just convert a color ad to a black and white ad. This was designed to be B/W from the start, with careful attention given to negative space. As always with this client, there are a lot of headlines and sub-heads, so type size, font choice and color are needed to help with the hierarchy as well as give visual interest.

SMC Summer Ad

SMC Summer Ad

Unable to use students in almost any of their advertising, the client chooses to use ’soft’ imagery depicting beneficial elements of the college by the beach. Other ads tout the weather and ease of parking, etc.

This ad began like as a stock image from my personal collection. While playing with Photoshop adjustment tools the colors solarized into an amazing combination of colors peach, pink orange and red. I stopped the process and sampled into my text colors.

Bookworm Ad

Part of an ad campaign. The ad is divided into thirds, the DJ/host picture would occupy the center. The blurb and boilerplate would be below and the font would carry the personality. Mostly black and white for newspaper, this one is the exception, so I used color very sparingly using a special tri-tone effect which creates interesting effects. The font is a modified Mrs. Eaves from Emigré.

Not one of my greatest pieces as far as design goes, but this ad was pulled together from concept to deadline in under 2 days. Submitted 3 concepts in the first day. I shot the cell/mobile phone in my backyard using the sun as a key-light. Did all the retouching and production including 7 ad-breakdowns for various pubs.

Not looking so shabby, now is it?

Healy Hudson Trade Ad

This was a hard project to get my head around. This is a trade ad for a software company that designs custom software/applications for manufacturing companies, who need logistical and sourcing help.

The client really gravitated to this concept. It’s simple by design, as their solutions are custom and therefore too diverse to be captured in one concept. So we went with the trusty compass to guide you to your destination.

! was asked to do this design over the weekend. Used some stock photography, that I shot, and some Photoshop™ retouching to get the feel of film speeding through the camera.

This ad ran as the campaign for the show The Treatment for over 2 years. Produced for a radio show where, Elvis Mitchell the host, interviews filmakers that work both in front and behind the camera.
