2008 Summer Sweeps
spacer
With this piece I decided to create in interesting background that, through contrast, I could manipulate the layout. I played with 5 backgrounds before choosing the one above. At this point in the campaign, KCRW’s online support drive was robust and I had to consider how to extend the print design into online cohesion.
I liked the way this turned out, as the white Mini lives in the white space of the layout and the vibrant images of the trips are framed against the dark blue.

KCRW 2001 Summer Sign-Up Sweepstakes - Back
spacer
For this piece I wanted to create a formal-looking layout and let the bright, vibrant colors of the photos, punch holes in the white-space. My influence on this comes from a book I have on japanese travel brochures, where minimalism and simplicity reign. I personally would like even more elegance brought into the layout and reduce the number of elements. Clients are not always great fans of this approach, as it can sometimes look like lazy design.

The piece folds in half, and then in half again on the vertical fold. This and other elements are inserted into a #10 envelope. I do 2 of these a year and I make sure that every one is unique. I submit 3 designs and the client chooses one. It’s part of the Sweepstakes Series.

Angel Winter Brochure

2007 Angel Winter

Sometimes a piece will come together exactly the way you picture it. This is one of those. A composite of 12 picture and illustration elements, with 30 individual pieces all sandwiched together. This is one of my top five personal favorites. The content doesn’t have anything to do with the message, other than create an environment in which to receive the message.

2007 Summer Premiums

This piece kinda ‘came together’. I found the parchment background first and once I began to place the elements on the page it started to look like an old medicine man poster. So I kept that flavor up using fonts and graphic elements. The premium elements were white and blue, so I kept the background in the warmer hues to allow the main elements to pop.

Angel Premiums French Version
spacer
Originally this brochure looked like a catalogue, with pictures of items and prices. As the product became more and more esoteric e.g: 1 years membership to a club. I convinced the client that we could achieve the same result yet create a corporate image.

I change the look of this piece completely twice a year. You can look at others in the series by clicking here.

KCRW Sweepstakes for Angels Level

Unfortunately this piece never saw a printers blanket. The design was scrapped in the first draft this is it. As the first attempt, it still has a lot of cleaning up to do as far as legibility and typefaces, however I really had great hope for this as the colors and the movement was all there.

In the end the client went with something simpler against my strong recommendations. In the end the client was happy, and that’s what really counts… No?

KCRW Music Match Direct Mail

An insert for a radio station whose collection of music and archives had outgrown their space. This was a call to subscribers to give a little more to save the collection.

Decided to allow the layout dictate the message, using the copy, which was a little verbose to act as a vehicle to describe the collection in the shelves. Also added an old reel to reel to really kick the nostalgia into gear.
