This is where I kicked it up a notch. This is a rendered 3D movie, which I edited down and brought in frame by frame. Due to size constraints I had to keep it short. At the time we were going with pink as the online signature color. We connected the banner to directly connect to the archived tune. The client really liked this and had me do another which you can see here.

Hagmann/Landau is/was a small commercial production company. I really liked this client as he let me get on with my job. We first began with some image ads and worked up from there, pretty soon I was recreating the image of the company. The final piece… the logo.

I always examine some sort of typographic interaction when I design logos. Some on a flat plane and some in 3D, when it works it’s amazing, otherwise I just crunch up the paper and move on to the next idea.

A quick website for an entrepreneur who was launching a new product. Pretty much left alone to do what I wanted on this site, with 2 restrictions… time and money. I really like the way orange and grey work together. You can do so many subtle things then you shift the grey hue to warm and cold. Client was super happy, and so he should be. This one came in under $1,000.

The site itself is now defunct but I have the skeletal working still on my site.

There is quite a bit of work on this one. If you look carefully, all the ribbons draw on individually and is a different hue for each, as well as type color changes. It’s laborious work but the effect feels polished and professional.

I had to break a lot of actionscript rules to get this done on time. I was able to keep all my actionscript in the timeline but I couldn’t keep all the elements in the first frame. The end result doesn’t matter as it looks the same, but I take pride in my coding and I like my flash to look as good on the inside as it does on the outside.

SMC Summer Ad

SMC Summer Ad

Unable to use students in almost any of their advertising, the client chooses to use ’soft’ imagery depicting beneficial elements of the college by the beach. Other ads tout the weather and ease of parking, etc.

This ad began like as a stock image from my personal collection. While playing with Photoshop adjustment tools the colors solarized into an amazing combination of colors peach, pink orange and red. I stopped the process and sampled into my text colors.

Sometimes a piece will come together exactly the way you picture it. This is one of those. A composite of 12 picture and illustration elements, with 30 individual pieces all sandwiched together. This is one of my top five personal favorites. The content doesn’t have anything to do with the message, other than create an environment in which to receive the message.

This piece kinda ‘came together’. I found the parchment background first and once I began to place the elements on the page it started to look like an old medicine man poster. So I kept that flavor up using fonts and graphic elements. The premium elements were white and blue, so I kept the background in the warmer hues to allow the main elements to pop.

Final size 5.5″ x 11″, folded and inserted into #10 envelope. Part of a small round-up mailing to subscribers to renew. The piece is mailed 3 times, each time it looses a prize. I was inspired by an old poster with hundreds of arrows pointing in a direction. The negative and positive space of an arrow creates some nice shapes in which to place type and other pieces of information.

Sweeps Flash Banner

This is a very simple home page slideshow banner that rotates through static screens. Clients like flash banners because they can squeeze a lot of message in a small space. The only drawback is that most web-masters require the file to be below a certain size, usually around 30K. The trick, as a designer, is to find fonts that read well and not allow the overall quality to suffer too much.

Japanese Brushwork KCRW Logo

Japanese Brushwork Logo

Designed to brand a campaign where contributors are able to choose products in lieu of support. The brief was to use a Japanese influence and re-create the stations’ logo. Initially offered to a calligrapher, I did a letter on spec and was awarded the project. This type of logo is very tricky, it takes a long time to get it just right, with pages and pages of practice letters. All the while trying to achieve the effect of an artist quickly doing it on a napkin.
