SMC Summer Ad
spacer
Unable to use students in almost any of their advertising, the client chooses to use ’soft’ imagery depicting beneficial elements of the college by the beach. Other ads tout the weather and ease of parking, etc.

This ad began like as a stock image from my personal collection. While playing with Photoshop adjustment tools the colors solarized into an amazing combination of colors peach, pink orange and red. I stopped the process and sampled into my text colors.

3 Screens Envelope Insert

Envelope Insert

Final size 5.5″ x 11″, folded and inserted into #10 envelope. Part of a small round-up mailing to subscribers to renew. The piece is mailed 3 times, each time it looses a prize. I was inspired by an old poster with hundreds of arrows pointing in a direction. The negative and positive space of an arrow creates some nice shapes in which to place type and other pieces of information.

KCRW Bookworm Ad

Bookworm Ad

Part of an ad campaign. The ad is divided into thirds, the DJ/host picture would occupy the center. The blurb and boilerplate would be below and the font would carry the personality. Mostly black and white for newspaper, this one is the exception, so I used color very sparingly using a special tri-tone effect which creates interesting effects. The font is a modified Mrs. Eaves from Emigré.

KCRW Angel Brochure

Angel Premiums French Version

Originally this brochure looked like a catalogue, with pictures of items and prices. As the product became more and more esoteric e.g: 1 years membership to a club. I convinced the client that we could achieve the same result yet create a corporate image.

I change the look of this piece completely twice a year. You can look at others in the series by clicking here.

FeatureSite Website

A site for a client that helps other companies build better sites… The obvious brief: This clients prospects will be looking hard at this site to judge the firms capabilities!

There are a few bells and whistles. A custom drop down menu, random generator code and delicate motion graphic typography. I also used a custom wipe for each page. As usual, being all about color, I chose a colorway and stuck to it. All the images came from my extensive personal image library. It’s an older piece but I think it still holds up pretty nice. Perhaps I’d re-do it as a full page liquid flash next time.

Indigo Logo

Indigo Logo

This was one of my first sketches I tried for this client. I wasn’t able to better it.

Sometimes your first ideas are the best, but you have to go through the design process to make sure the first is in fact the best. Indigo was a commercial production house in Santa Monica, California. They wanted a quirky logo with some “personality”. One of the colors was an easy choice.

Mini Cooper Postcard

A postcard-promo sweepstake featuring a Mini Cooper. An additional $5,000 added to the prize to customize the car. I found a vector illustration of a Mini with quite a few ‘extras’.

Postcards, by nature have to be rough-and-ready, a simple quick read. The choice of the red and blue connect with another targeted piece whose colorway was the same.

! was asked to do this design over the weekend. Used some stock photography, that I shot, and some Photoshop™ retouching to get the feel of film speeding through the camera.

This ad ran as the campaign for the show The Treatment for over 2 years. Produced for a radio show where, Elvis Mitchell the host, interviews filmakers that work both in front and behind the camera.
